Crucibles are available in many different materials to meet the needs of different experiments. Do you know how we should choose a crucible for TGA analysis?
In general, crucibles should be selected from materials that are not reactive or catalytically active for the specimen, intermediate products, final products, and atmosphere.
Some researchers have found that the decomposition temperature of sodium carbonate is lower in quartz or ceramic crucibles than in white gold crucibles because SiO2 in quartz or ceramic crucibles reacts with sodium carbonate at about 500°C to form sodium silicate and carbonate.
Do not use aluminum crucible, quartz glass crucible, the ceramic crucible, etc. for alkaline samples of sodium carbonate.
Teflon samples are also not suitable for use in ceramic, glass, or quartz crucibles because they can also form volatile carbon compounds under certain conditions with the crucibles described above.
When using platinum crucibles, they should not be used for polymers containing phosphorus, sulfur, or halogens, because platinum has hydrogenation or dehydrogenation activity for many organics. At the same time, polymers containing phosphorus or sulfur are also corrosive to platinum crucibles.
It follows that for different specimens it is better to use different crucibles.
